Renting a room
By: Tans 2 You | Posted on: 07/07/2010 10:52

Hi all - just wondering if any technicians out there rent a room for spray tanning/beauty? If so what sort of fees do you pay, what are the pros and cons? Does the noise cause a problem if in a salon? Just curious as may have to change the way I work! Thanks for any response xx

Hi i had my own private room in my own salon. Now at home with a fully converted tanning room! It a huge committment as i rented the salon itself on a 6 yr lease, decided i wanted out after 20 months. I basically worked to pay the bills, always more to concider than you account for. YOu are under pressure to book x amount of tans a week to cover your outgoings. You have to be at the salon many more hours than you actually tan. I would of expected to pay around £50 a week for a room. Since starting at home never looked back no regrets at all, the salon was an emotional and financial drain. Away from children etc. . . Being at home i work any hours a tan is needed 7 in the morning or 11pm at night, weekends, if im at home i never turn work away. Inbetween clients i can be here for the children, get dinner on right now im here waiting for my next ladies etc etc. . . Overheads a minimum and no pressure at all with bookings, it wouldnt matter a dot if no one booked in again! Im so much more relaxed, quite a difference in many ways. The pros are if you are in a salon you have the customers coming in anyway for hair etc, but make sure parking is convenient, no one wants to walk thr town bra less and freshly tanned back to their car. Are you at home now or mobile? Wouldnt do mobile for anything take my hat off to all you ladies, hard hard work. Noise not really an issue in a salon, with a private room. Wouldnt recommend you share with anyone though ie beautican as the overspray and discolouration wil evening be a problem.

Hi there. . Thanks for your once again detailed and informative reply! Am in a pickle now as started mobile but got so busy I had a room at home which I use however some neighbours are not happy about the increase in cars up our road (we live on a private park not trying to sound snobby by the way! ) and our deeds state that we are not allowed to run a business! ! ! Helpppppp what do I do. . . I dont advertise as all my clients are referrals but there are only so many 'friends' you can spray! ! ! Agree about the mobile. . Have done it and its a problem. . Made enquiries about rooms and round here they are looking from £150 per week! ! ! That's two seperate enquiries too! I know what you mean. . I do this job cos I love it but it is more of a hobby and I dont want the stress in making X amount of bookings just to pay the rent! So not sure what I will do. . . . Worried of Tans 2 You! ! ! X

Understood. Difficult situation. Its word of mouth for you, how about just walking into all your local salons/beauty palours etc with a business card stating what you are looking for and your budget. Someone somewhere outthere will surely rather the small extra income a week for an empty room than miss out and an extra service on their price list. How about local hotelsi i had one approach me, to convert the old coaching house alongside to a tanning/salon room. A hotel might be glad of you there for £ 30/40 a week. Business from residents would be a bonus to. Or maybe just move housei ! No only kidding. Although saying that, im thinking of moving to rent a bigger property i have a bigger tanning room from cos i want to train and employ other techs and rent out my house! Anything is possible, an answer to everything out there somewhere, dont give up anyway, lyn x

Hi Lyn. . Thanks for the great ideas and positive thoughts. . I would love to be a trainer but not happy about having to go on the course which costs around £2K. . May approach Naturasun as if they train you then you can get accredited if you sell their products. . . I could be their representative. . Although I would want it to work round me more than them . . . Thanks again x Sue x

All companies want trainers, but it is under their banner, and really all you are is a rep for the company, and self employed. I looked into this a couple of years ago and if you want to be a professional trainer then you need the back up of an insured training course by a professional body not a company. It costs alot, and you need to know all about equipment and solution compounds, not just one brand, and this does come at a cost.

Hi, to the Salon at Sedgwick - how much did it cost you to convert a room for tanningi I am mobile, and you are right, it is hard work especially when you have several clients lined up for the day, all at different addresses! Lol. . . We are considering moving house, and would like to factor in the idea of construcing a room for this purpose. Your advice would be greatly appreciated on this matter. Thanks :)
